CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, USA — Axiom, the world’s largest independent provider of general-purpose MicroStation utilities and a leading provider of e-learning for MicroStation and Autodesk users, announces the release of Detail Finder, an application that allows someone to quickly find details, cells, blocks and more in any number of MicroStation and AutoCAD files.
By simply entering in a text string, Detail Finder immediately shows a list of all the MicroStation and AutoCAD files that contain the text string in objects such as details, cells, blocks, references and tags. When a file is selected from the list, Detail Finder shows a thumbnail of the file and a list of objects in the file which contain the text string.
Double-clicking any object in the list causes the file to open (in MicroStation or AutoCAD) and to zoom in on the exact element/object. If multiple instances of the text are found in the same file, Detail Finder cycles through each instance with just a click of a button.
How does Detail Finder operate so quickly, even when pointed at tens of thousands of design and drawing files? Like an Internet search engine, Detail Finder automatically indexes the contents of the selected group of CAD files, creates a database of information about the files that it has been pointed to and periodically updates the data in the database in order to catch changes that have been made in the drawings.
Detail Finder can search AutoCAD DWG and DXF files and MicroStation DGN files. Additionally, the user interface can be set to use either MicroStation or AutoCAD terminology, based on user preference.

How to Handle the Rats’ Nest Masquerading as “Nested References” in Some MicroStation Files
“Most everyone recognizes that nested references can be cool — except when you’re a few levels deep and have to start keeping a spiral notebook to track them. The real goat rodeo gets started once you add inexperienced users and/or piss-poor file management into the overall mix. – Anonymous CAD Manager.” MicroStation’s Live Nesting…
