The truth about FileFixer, MicroStation design file corruption and you

Confessions of a product manager

By Steve Palmer
Clearwater, Florida, USA — It’s time to confess. We’ve been hiding the truth from MicroStation users since 1986. The most respected, widely used and well-known third-party application for MicroStation, FileFixer, is misnamed. We goofed.

True, FileFixer can repair files that cause MicroStation to abort and that MicroStation cannot open. FileFixer can repair unselectable elements, unselectable models, missing level definitions and elements that fall off the design plane.

FileFixer’s name doesn’t begin to describe what it can do for you.

But the name “FileFixer” doesn’t begin to explain how all this technical wizardry benefits you personally.
That’s why FileFixer’s name is inadequate. Perhaps we should give it a new name like “Thanks for the raise!” or “Finally got to join my family for dinner!” Based on comments received from MicroStation users, maybe we should call FileFixer “Project Schedule Insurance” or “Weekend Creator” or “Thank goodness MicroStation stopped aborting!”

But that’s not our only confession about FileFixer. For more than two decades we’ve gone on and on about the millions of dollars invested in the research and development of FileFixer. We’ve talked endlessly about FileFixer’s half million lines of code. The FileFixer development team brags about its meticulous, grueling testing. All of that emphasizes how difficult it has been to develop FileFixer.

But the truth is, as far as MicroStation users like you are concerned, it’s really easy to use FileFixer – just press the <Start> button, watch FileFixer’s blue progress bar move across the screen for a few seconds and then get back to work with your repaired file. Yes, FileFixer’s development required some blood, sweat and tears for 20+ years, but that has nothing to do with you. FileFixer is really simple to use.
This is what really happens when you select FileFixer from the Axiom menu.

There are only 10 (binary) things you need to know about FileFixer.
01. FileFixer can search for problems in your project files and report in detail what it finds. We call this “Search for Problems” mode.

10. FileFixer can repair your corrupted design files and cell libraries. We call this “Automatic Design File Repair” mode.

That’s really all you need to know. Just pick one of the two modes and press <Start>.

FileFixer can be used proactively or reactively (or both).
Many CAD Managers use FileFixer proactively by using “Search for Problems” at specific time intervals – perhaps once per week or once per month. This allows them to monitor the health of their design files and catch corruption before it impacts production. While searching for problems, FileFixer can generate a list of the most severely corrupted files; there might only be a few severely corrupted project files out of a hundred. After using “Search for Problems” to identify the most mangled files, you can use “Automatic Design File Repair” mode to repair just the identified troublemakers before they impact your project. FileFixer’s ability to identify the exact troublemakers can save you and your colleagues countless hours of confusion and hassles per file.
Even the best proactive practices can’t entirely eliminate reactive use of FileFixer – emergency design file repair. Does MicroStation abort while attempting to open a design file? Use “Automatic Design File Repair” mode to salvage the file.
